Former Rep. Liz Cheney (R-Wyo.) joined Rep. Colin Allred (D-Texas) for a sit-down interview during which she went after his Texas Senate race opponent, deeming Sen. Ted Cruz (R-Texas) untrustworthy.

During their first joint interview since officially endorsing Allred, Cheney discussed finding common ground with the Democrat and criticized the Republican incumbent.

“You can’t trust Ted Cruz,” Cheney told ABC News affiliate WFAA in an interview on Monday night. “He’s going to say whatever he has to say to serve his own political purpose. But I’ve worked with Colin. We were on different sides of the aisle, different sides of the issues, but at the end of the day, I know he has the interest of the people of Texas first and foremost.”

Cheney, the former No. 3 leader of the House Republican Conference, slammed the two-term GOP senator.

“[He] proposed this completely unconstitutional plan that would have resulted in throwing out electoral votes, throwing out the votes of millions of Americans,” said Cheney, referring to the fake elector scheme following the 2020 presidential election. 

Earlier this month, Cheney said she would be backing Allred while at the Texas Tribune Festival in Austin, praising the House Democrat as someone who would serve in "good faith.” 

Allred said he was “honored” to have Cheney’s endorsement, adding that he also wants “principled conservatives in this state to know that I want them to be a part of this campaign, that they are welcome in our coalition.” 

“And here in Texas, as Liz said, we have a pretty stark choice, one between a Senator who has only been interested in himself, who put himself and his political interests and his party interests over the Constitution in an incredibly dangerous way that nearly succeeded in overturning an American presidential election and somebody who will put us first,” Allred said during the interview.

The Texas Senate polling shows, that while the race has gotten closer, Cruz still has the advantage. 

Allred was 4 points behind Cruz in the latest Emerson College Polling/The Hill poll that came out this week. Cruz was up by only 2 points in the University of Houston/Texas Southern University (UH/TSU) released late last month. The Democrat

A University of Texas/Texas Politics Project (UT) survey from last week also showed Allred 8 points behind Cruz. But the pollster said the House Democrat has slowly melted his deficit as he trailed by 16 points in the same poll last December. 

Cruz’s campaign fired back at Cheney, saying her “crusade” versus the “top” GOP lawmakers is the reason “why no one takes her endorsement of any candidate seriously.”  

“Texas voters care about the issues, that’s why Senator Cruz has been endorsed by Democrats across the state including DA Kim Ogg, county sheriffs, and local elected officials — folks who actually care about saving Texas, not cheap political entertainment,” Cruz's campaign spokesperson told The Hill in a statement. 

“She was overwhelmingly rejected by voters in Wyoming two years ago, just like Colin Allred will be in 50 days by Texas voters,” the spokesperson added. “She’s a loser, and soon he will be too, but hey, it takes one to know one.”

Cheney, a vocal critic of former President Trump, said earlier this month she will be voting for Vice President Harris in the 2024 presidential election.
