Vice President Harris is leading former President Trump in North Carolina by around 1 point, according to a new poll.

The poll, from Elon University, found about 46 percent of registered voters backing Harris in a hypothetical matchup and about 45 percent backing Trump. Four percent in the poll said they hadn’t picked a candidate.

The Tar Heel State is one of a handful of important swing states either Trump or Harris might have to capture to win the presidency in November. Trump won the state in 2016 and 2020, but former President Obama won it in 2008.

Trump is barely leading Harris in an average of North Carolina polls from The Hill/Decision Desk HQ, at 48.3 percent compared to the vice president’s 47.7 percent.

North Carolina’s politics have also been in the national spotlight recently due to a bombshell report by CNN about Lt. Gov. Mark Robinson (R), who is the Republican gubernatorial candidate. The CNN report unveiled a large span of inflammatory comments that Robinson reportedly made on a pornography website’s message board more than 10 years ago, like calling himself a “black NAZI.”

Robinson and North Carolina Attorney General Josh Stein (D) are currently battling it out for the Tar Heel State's governorship. The Elon poll found more North Carolinians backing Stein at around 49 percent to Robinson’s around 35 percent.

The Elon poll took place between Sep. 4 and Sept. 13, featuring 800 people and a margin of error of plus or minus 3.74 percentage points.
